Tony Dubovsky is in the process of leaving his Wurster office—after almost five decades!—which means letting go not just of physical things, but also a revisiting of many many thoughts and memories. The photos following, together with the writing, are part of this, and I’d like to share them with you—friends and students, students and friends, over the many years. Just like one of my classes--spontaneous, inadvertent--where we can touch on anything, and opening is the goal...

Embrace
Embrace. Living is round--that was Jean-Paul's phrase, in a beautiful book on African spaces. But here we embrace in a time of challenge--it's November 2016, election night, and Jeremy (wonderful Jeremy, his head lowered on the right) has checked his phone, it's 8:05 and the news is grim. The things we value--argue for and defend--none of them come free. Even if freedom itself is their very source. You see that here, on the faces--as if in prayer--and maybe we are, for prayer has brought us close.
Is that true, really? Maybe it's the absence of prayer--more a daily resolve--to be good, to be kind, to take the other into account. Into your arms, even, when need be.
A drawing can do this, a painting, too. Any of the things we form with our hands--letting each line, each gesture and form, find it's own endearing truth.
It's very own...
